SOMIS : School Candidates to Be Interviewed

Share

Somis Union School District officials have scheduled interviews today with five candidates--all parents or future parents of students--for membership on the board.

The interviews and the selection of a successor to Loyetta Aukstkalnis will take place at a board meeting closed to the public.

Aukstkalnis, a board member for six years, resigned on March 7 for personal reasons, Supt. Dale Forgey said.

The resignation followed the disclosure that the district rented space to a day-care center run by Aukstkalnis’ son-in-law, Forgey said.

Under state law, the board has 60 days to appoint a new member or schedule a special election. The board could reject all five applicants and interview new applicants. The board probably will select a new member today, Forgey said.

All applicants are legally required to live in the Somis school district. None have served on or run for the board.

The applicants are:

* Carol Davis, the mother of two children. She is involved with the Somis Parent-Faculty Organization.

* Mary Lingua, with two children, is active in the Parent-Faculty Organization. She is the director of plans and analysis at the Point Mugu Naval Civil Engineering Lab. Lingua serves on the School Site Council, an advisory committee to the school board.

* Beth Miller, the mother of one, does volunteer work and is active in the Parent-Faculty Organization.

* Lisa Percival, a registered nurse, serves on the School Site Council and is a member of the Parent-Faculty Organization. She has two children.

* Rhett Searcy, a Ventura County sheriff’s deputy, is the father of one. He has volunteered to be a liaison between law enforcement and the school district.

The new member, who will take office at the next board meeting, will serve until the next board election in November, 1992.
