A 55-year-old man died early Thursday, about two hours after he was hit by a car as he tried to cross a street in Lancaster, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported.

The victim, a transient whose name was not disclosed because relatives had not been notified, was crossing Avenue I at Beech Avenue when he was struck shortly before 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sgt. Ron Shreves said. He was pronounced dead at 12:35 a.m. Thursday at Antelope Valley Hospital Medical Center.

No charges were anticipated against the car’s driver, Judy Faye Windemaker, 41, of Lancaster, Detective David Davidson said. Windemaker was traveling within the 40 m.p.h. speed limit and attempted to stop but could not, he said. She was not hurt.

“It appears the person just walked out in front of the vehicle,” Davidson said.
