Sale of Eastern Routes Approved: The Transportation Department approved the transfer of Eastern Airlines’ Latin American routes to American Airlines but stalled a proposal to turn over the troubled airline’s only remaining Canadian route. The $349-million route sale is central to Eastern’s plans to rebuild under the direction of a bankruptcy court. A federal bankruptcy judge approved the proposed sale of Eastern’s Latin American routes and related assets last month. The approval is temporary, and would not become final until after a 10-day period for objections to the deal and responses from the airlines.
