Teacher Sentenced for Sex With Student

A San Fernando High School teacher was sentenced Friday to six months of house arrest and placed on five years’ probation after pleading guilty to two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a 16-year-old female student, prosecutors said.

Richard Shrake, 53, of Valencia was also ordered to complete 800 hours of community service, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Kenneth L. Barshop. Shrake was arrested in April, 1989, after the student told police about her relationship with the teacher, police said.

The girl, now 18, attended San Fernando High School but was not a student of Shrake’s, authorities said.

Los Angeles Unified School District spokeswoman Diana Munatones said Shrake is on compulsory leave of absence without pay. School district lawyers are expected to review the conviction before deciding whether he should be fired, she said.

Shrake has been a special-education teacher at the high school since 1982 and has worked on and off for the district for 22 years, Munatones said after the man’s arrest last year.
