Busy N.Y. Waterway Temporarily Closed

NEWARK, N. J. —
About 1,500 gallons of a lightweight petroleum distillate spilled from a tank storage area Friday into a busy waterway between New York and New Jersey, temporarily closing it to traffic, officials said.
The liquid, naphtha, has the consistency of cigarette lighter fluid and was expected to evaporate rapidly, said Lt. Cmdr. Paul Milligan at Coast Guard headquarters on Governors Island, N. Y.
“It will probably dissipate quicker than we can get equipment to clean it up,” Milligan said.
