Festival for Wetlands

Wetlands Preservation ‘90, a free two-day festival designed to build grass-roots support for the preservation of California’s Coastal Wetlands and the Pacific Flyway, will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and Sunday at Westchester Park, located at Manchester Avenue and Lincoln Boulevard in Westchester.

Billed as an official Earth Day 1990 kick-off event, Wetlands Preservation ’90 is sponsored by the Sierra Club Angeles Chapter.

“Wetlands Preservation ’90 is intended to generate public awareness of and aid for the protection of wetlands in California and along the Pacific Flyway,” said Peter Saundry, chairman of the Wetlands Preservation executive committee.

“All events and attractions of Wetlands Preservation ’90 will be consistent with the environmental goals of the Sierra Club.” Funds generated will be used for wetlands protection by the Sierra Club.

The weekend program will include:

* Open house for the Tall Ship Californian at Fisherman’s Village in Marina del Rey;

* Presentations by national and regional environmentalists and scientists;

* Environmental Faire with arts and crafts exhibits;

* Hands-on nature experiences for children;

* West Coast Wetlands Walking Tour;

* Recycling Education Center;

* Wetlands-on-Wheels Mobile Educational Display;

* Celebrity kite-flying exhibition;

* Children’s Art Exhibition/Poster and Essay Competition, with the theme “No Wild, No Wildlife,” open to children in the Los Angeles school district;

* Natural and Organic Food Pavilion;

* 20-Mile Scenic Family Bike Ride on Sunday at 8:45 a.m.
