Kaiser Employees Return to Work After Strike

Share

Technicians, maintenance workers and licensed vocational nurses began returning to work Tuesday at seven Kaiser Permanente hospitals and 45 clinics in Los Angeles and Orange counties, ending an eight-day strike. The new contract signed by officials of Kaiser and the Service Employees International Union Local 399 calls for all workers to return by Thursday.

A Kaiser spokeswoman said individual hospitals and clinics were making decisions on who to call back to work first. Some facilities called all workers back on Tuesday. Others gave preference to workers with seniority or made decisions on most-needed specialties.

Hospitals were only 45% full and doctors were seeing only about 70% of their normal patient load Monday when workers voted to accept a new contract offer.
