Redondo Beach resident Elinor Accampo has received a Phi Kappa Phi Faculty Recognition Award from USC. The associate professor of history was honored for her book, “Industrialization, Family Life and Class Relations: Saint Chamond, 1815-1914” (Berkeley, 1989).

Soroptimist International of Lawndale-South Bay has announced the names of six winners of the Soroptimist Youth Citizenship Awards. The students, all seniors at Leuzinger High School, are Sandra T. M. Chong, first place; Bhawna Kumar, second place; Darlene A. Alejo, third place; Tuong-Thwy Hoang, Theresa Vo and Christianne Garsault, honorable mention.

The judges were James Waters, superintendent, Lawndale School District; Helen Rodgers, retired librarian from El Camino College; John Gluekert, businessman.

Nancy Ellenberger and Cheryl Russell of Manhattan Beach were named South Bay Volunteers of the Year by the Los Angeles Community Action Network (LA CAN) in recognition of their outstanding community service during 1989. LA CAN is a nonprofit group of Southland volunteers who staff fund-raisers and other events for charities and other community-assistance organizations.

Kathy Fleming has been appointed marketing director of the Norris Theatre for the Performing Arts. She was assistant director for the Public Corp. for the Arts, the arts council for Long Beach.

Gardena resident Roxana Lewis has been elected a trustee of the Institute of Certified Travel Agents, Wellesley, Mass. The institute is a national, nonprofit organization offering educational programs for travel industry members at all career stages. Lewis and her husband, Howard, are owners of Chartwell Travel Services in Inglewood.

Dorothea Logan of Torrance been named director of volunteer services for San Pedro Peninsula Hospital. Prior to accepting the position, Logan served for 12 years as the hospital’s junior volunteer coordinator. Previously, she volunteered more than 15 years as a Girl Scout Leader and was an soccer coach. Logan is a graduate of Drexel University in Philadelphia.

Sally Beattie of Rancho Palos Verdes has been installed president of the Torrance Memorial Hospital Medical Center Auxiliary. Other officers are president-elect Donna Mathwig of San Pedro, vice presidents Alice Young of Palos Verdes Estates and Joyce Bell of Rancho Palos Verdes, secretary Jan Campbell of Palos Verdes Estates and treasurer Marcia Berman of Torrance.

Parvin Shariat of Torrance has been elected president of the Northrop University Faculty Senate. Also elected were Peter Fordi of Inglewood, vice president, and Peter Pereira of Los Angeles, secretary-treasurer.

Shariat, who has been teaching and researching at the university since 1985, earned her bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering at Shiraz University in Iran and received both her master’s degree and a Ph.D in materials science from USC.

Fordi, an avionics instructor at the university’s Institute of Technology since 1987, received his master of arts from Fordham University and completed certificate programs in aircraft maintenance at the University of the District of Columbia and in electronics at West Los Angeles Community College. He has worked in the aviation industry for more than 20 years.

Pereira, a 1989 graduate of Northrop University with a bachelor of science degree in aerospace engineering technology, also studied at the Hindustan Institute of Engineering Technology in Madras, India, and the Datamatics Institute of Management in Bombay, India.
