A man convicted of wounding a man in a gang-related, drive-by shooting was sentenced Thursday to five years in state prison.

Ivory Farmer, 22, of Hillcrest, was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon in the Aug. 11 shooting of Dwight McGee in front of the Skyline Recreation Center.

McGee, who was the center recreation leader, had tried to break up a fight among gang members in the weight room. When he went outside, a bullet struck him in the stomach.

He underwent surgery to repair holes in his intestines and was released from the hospital after nine days. McGee did not appear at the sentencing.

Farmer was originally charged with attempted murder but pleaded guilty to the assault charge in a plea bargain.

San Diego Superior Court Judge Herbert Exarhos also imposed an eight-month consecutive sentence for an unrelated felony count of possession of crack cocaine.

Farmer was also fined $1,200 and given credit for time served.
