Natalia Zvereva fought off match point twice to beat Zina Garrison in the Bausch & Lomb tennis championships Friday night at Amelia Island, Fla.

Zvereva, seeded fifth, advanced to the semifinals with a 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4) victory. She will play top-ranked Steffi Graf in the semifinals today.

Garrison fought off match point twice herself to even the third set at five games apiece.

“I didn’t play at all in the first set,” said Garrison, who led, 3-1, in the third-set tiebreaker. “My strategy was to attack when I had the chance, and it started to work in the second set.”

Second-seeded Gabriela Sabatini will play third-seeded Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, who eliminated Helen Kelesi, 7-5, 6-4. Sabatini defeated Isabel Cueto, 6-3, 6-2.

Top-seeded Ivan Lendl complained about the wind and rain and lost the first two games, but bounced back to beat Amos Mansdorf of Israel, 6-4, 6-2, in the quarterfinals of the $1.15-million Japan Open at Tokyo.

Third-seeded Brad Gilbert of the United States and second-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden also won. The match between Aaron Krickstein and Michael Chang was suspended because of rain after Krickstein won the first set, 7-6 (7-2), and led, 1-0, in the second. It will be completed today.

Edberg, the defending champion, defeated seventh-seeded Jim Grabb, 6-3, 6-3, and Gilbert beat sixth-seeded Australian Wally Masur, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).

Gilbert plays Edberg in the semifinals.

Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union upset top-seeded Jay Berger of the United States, 6-2, 6-4, in the quarterfinals at Barcelona, Spain.
