ROUNDUP : Northridge Sweep Fueled by Quintuple Double

The Cal State Northridge softball team had 25 hits--including five doubles--in sweeping a nonconference doubleheader against Santa Clara on Saturday at Cal State Northridge.

CSUN won the first game, 7-4, and the second, 5-0.

Jeanne Mixon blasted a three-run home run over the center-field fence in the fifth to give Northridge a 5-3 lead in the first game. Teammate Erin McGuire went three for four and added a run batted in.

In the second game, sophomore Heather Lindstrom (11-5) scattered three singles and Lisa Ferracone and Denise Swank both went two for three for the Matadors (32-17). Swank also had two RBIs.

BASEBALL

CS San Bernardino 1-9, The Master’s 0-6 (1st game, 10 innings)--Mark MacArthur hit a grand slam and Jeff Cole hit a solo home run for The Master’s in the second game of a doubleheader against visiting San Bernardino.

The second game was shortened to seven innings by prior agreement, and Bill Scott (2-2) lost in relief for The Master’s (19-18).

In the first game, San Bernardino broke a scoreless tie in the top of the 10th with three consecutive one-out singles. Mike Weinstein (2-2), who started for The Master’s, gave up singles to Jeff Brennan and Miguel Salazar. Reliever Rick Simpson promptly surrendered a single to Mike Main that scored Brennan.

TRACK

Russell Cup Invitational--Oak Park’s Kent Richter won the 400 meters and finished second in two other events in the meet at Carpinteria.

Richter won the 400 in 49.79 seconds, was second in the long jump at 20 feet, 11 inches and second in the 200 in 22.89. Aaron Majors threw the discus 141-4 for second, and teammate Kevin Ward was second in the 1,600 with a time of 4:28 for Oak Park.

Oak Park’s Jen Frank won the girls’ 100 in 12.80, and Harnethia Mansell won the discus with a toss of 105-7. Frank finished second in the long jump to Taryn Tarver of Santa Clara.

Jodi Runyan leaped 32-2 in the triple jump to set a new Oak Park school record, but Moorpark’s April Beaver beat Runyan by two inches to win the event.
