EARTH DAY CELEBRATIONS

Earth Day 1990, which falls on April 22, is being celebrated in a myriad of ways all week around Southern California. Here are some of the highlights on the Westside. Most are free to the public except where a minimal fee is noted. For information on other events, check with your local city hall or college campuses.

Tree planting--A tree-planting ceremony scheduled for Sunday at the Red Cross building in Westwood was erroneously listed in The Times last Sunday as a public event.

West L.A. College--”Culver City Earth Day 1990 Festival,” beginning at noon April 22, will include a bike-a-thon, workshops, speakers, booths and the kickoff of the city’s recycling program; 4800 Freshman Drive.

Los Angeles

Pollution Forum--A forum titled “Ocean Pollution and Coastal Oil Drilling”; noon Monday at UCLA’s Ackerman Ballroom; guests will include Dorothy Green of Heal the Bay, Bob Sulnick of American Oceans Campaign and Rep. Mel Levine.

Awareness Expo--Earth Day 1990 Awareness Expo; 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Century City Shopping Center/ABC Entertainment Center, 10200 Santa Monica Blvd; speakers, booths and displays with environmental themes.

‘Population Explosion’--A lecture titled “The Population Explosion”; noon Tuesday at USC’s Hancock Auditorium; reception and book signing with author Paul Ehrlich; sponsored by Californians for Population Stabilization.

Toxics and Pesticides--Lecture; noon Thursday at UCLA’s Ackerman Ballroom; sponsored by the UCLA Environmental Coalition; guests include state Sen. Art Torres.

‘Eco-Fair’--Student-organized “Eco-Fair”; noon Thursday at Venice High School, 13000 Venice Blvd.; Earth Day quilt; Councilwoman Ruth Galanter and 20 environmental organizations will participate.

Rally--Exhibits and entertainment; 11:45 a.m. Friday at UCLA’s Westwood Plaza (near Ackerman Union).

Conference--Homeopathic medicine; Friday through April 22 at the Los Angeles Airport Hilton hotel; 25 health-care professionals demonstrate remedies for such things as alcoholism and eating disorders.

‘Clean Sweep’--Citywide cleanup with more than 1,000 anti-graffiti volunteers; 8 a.m. to noon Saturday in each of the 15 council districts; to participate call (213) 237-1797.

Rain Forests--Displays, discussions, lectures and children’s programs regarding issues surrounding the destruction of tropical rain forests; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 21-22 at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History; rain forest exhibit runs through May 27.

Homeless Benefit--Music, arts and crafts; 11 a.m. Saturday at the Venice Pavilion picnic area.

Ballona Wetlands Fair--Music, food, speeches, booths, native plant and bird displays; beginning 9 a.m. April 22 (bird walks 7:30 to 9 a.m.); Teale Street off of Lincoln Boulevard south of Jefferson Boulevard.

Art Workshop--Featuring scarecrow workshop, country music and dedication of a children’s garden; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 22 at Barnsdall Art Park, 4814 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood.

Tree Planting--Community tree planting and picnic (bring a shovel, trowel and garden gloves); noon April 22 at the Red Cross building at Sawtelle Boulevard and Ohio Avenue, West Los Angeles.

‘Earth Day Malibu’--A festival including music, speakers, nature and tide pool walks, hiking, children’s art and Indian performances; 10 a.m. April 22 at Bluff Park, Pacific Coast Highway and Malibu Canyon Road; park at Civic Center, Webb and Civic Center Way; shuttle buses will run between Civic Center and Bluff Park. Also, ‘Adopt-A-Beach’ cleanup will be held at Surfrider’s Beach, Malibu, at 8 a.m.

Santa Monica

Party--Earth Day birthday party for children will include live entertainment; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Third Street Promenade.

‘Home, Sweet Home’--Lecture and seed-planting; 10 a.m. April 22, Plummer Park, West Hollywood.

Rally--”From the River to the Sea,” walking and jogging event; 10:30 a.m. April 22 at the Crossroads School, 1714 21st St.; meet at school, then march at noon to the Santa Monica Pier.

Pier Rally--North side of Santa Monica Pier; noon to 2 p.m. April 22.
