THE SIDELINES : Nos. 7, 8 Lose Nice Matches
Seventh-seeded Petr Korda of Czechoslovakia and No. 8 Jorgi Arrese of Spain were beaten today in the opening round of the Philips Open tennis tournament.
Andrei Cherkasov of the Soviet Union rallied to beat Korda 0-6, 7-5, 7-5, and Aki Rahunan of Finland defeated Arrese, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
In other first-round matches, Tomas Carbonell of Spain beat Martin Strlba of Czechoslovakia 6-3, 6-1, and Goran Prpic of Yugoslavia downed Jan Gunnarsson of Sweden, 7-6 (7-1), 7-5.
In a battle of Frenchmen, 17-year-old Fabrice Santoro beat Jean-Philippe Fleurian 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.
