A car struck a utility pole in Playa del Rey on Thursday evening, knocking out electrical power to about 3,000 residential and commercial customers--including parts of Los Angeles International Airport, officials said.

No one was injured in the accident on Imperial Highway near Pershing Drive, fire officials said.

The crash triggered four separate outages between 7:09 p.m. and 7:45 p.m., said a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

The Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX was without power for about 15 minutes, long enough to affect refueling and to delay some departing flights, said Jess Karch, operations coordinator for the Department of Airports.

Runway lights were out for only seconds before auxiliary power units began operating, Karch said. No arriving flights were affected by the power failure, he said.

Residential customers were without power for as little as five minutes and up to half an hour, the DWP spokeswoman said.
