SPORTSCOPE : Carson Swimmer Earns High Finishes at Championships

Claudine Martinez, 17, of Carson placed in three events at the recent National YMCA Short Course Swimming Championships held at Orlando, Fla. Martinez, who swims for the San Pedro and Peninsula YMCA, finished third in the 200-yard individual medley, fourth in the 400-yard IM and 8th in the 1,650-yard freestyle. About 5,000 swimmers from more than 230 YMCAs participated in the four-day event. Others from the San Pedro and Peninsula YMCA who competed were Chris McAllister, Tina Leuthard, Rod Wallace, Heather Miller, Sarah McFarland and Deborah Kory (Rancho Palos Verdes), Roy Elliott and Sean Lemm (Redondo Beach), Alisa Scudamore (Palos Verdes Estates), Bruce Jones (San Pedro) and John Shieh (Torrance).
