Marion Jones of Rio Mesa High, a national age-group record-holder in the girls’ 200 meters, will try to add the age-14 standard in the 400 in the Mt. San Antonio College Relays in Walnut on Saturday.

The four-day meet, which began with junior college competition Thursday, will feature high school events today and Saturday; university and open athletes will compete Saturday and Sunday.

Jones broke former Rio Mesa standout Angela Burnham’s age-14 record (24.08 seconds) in the 200 when she ran 23.80 to finish second in the Arcadia Invitational two weeks ago. Saturday, she will attempt to break the age-14 record (53.82) in the 400, set by Denean Howard of Kennedy in 1979.

Jones also will anchor Rio Mesa’s 4 x 100- and 4 x 200-meter relays.

Like Jones, Bryan Dameworth of Agoura is expected to run in three events. The 1989 Kinney national cross-country champion is entered in the 3,000 and the 4 x 1,600 relay today and in the 1,500 on Saturday.

Several Cal State Northridge athletes, headed by Paul Albers and Kevin Hendrix on the men’s side, and by Lolita Pile and Kim Young on the women’s, will compete in the university open division.

Albers will take a best of 186 feet 10 inches into the hammer throw Saturday, and Hendrix will run in the 100 and 200 on Saturday and in the 1,600 relay Sunday.

Pile, the runner-up in the triple jump in last year’s NCAA Division II championships, will compete in that event Sunday.

Young, a freshman from Madera High, will compete in the 100 low hurdles Sunday.

Darcy Arreola of the Nike Coast Track Club and Farron Fields of Northridge head the list of local entries in the invitational events.

Arreola, who is redshirting at CSUN this season, will run in the 3,000 Saturday night and in the 1,500 Sunday afternoon.

Fields, who timed 13 minutes 51 seconds in a 5,000-meter road race in Carlsbad last month, will run his first 10,000-meter race on the track Saturday night as part of the meet’s distance carnival.

With both Glendale and Valley college bypassing the meet, Gil Carrillo of Moorpark turned in the best performance by a local athlete in Thursday’s JC events, finishing second in the men’s javelin with a throw of 198 feet 3 inches.

Ryan Rapoza of Ventura placed third at 194-7, and Gerard Langlois of Central Arizona threw 212-5 to win the event.

Jaime Galindo of Ventura, who won the junior college 5,000 at the Fresno Relays on April 7, finished sixth in the 1,500 in 3:58.2 seconds. Shannon Lemora of Central Arizona clocked 3:51.51 to win.
