Sydney’s Tall Skinnies

Share

As I scanned letters to the editor, I was drawn to the one about tall skinny houses (“Big Lots vs. ‘Skinnies’ ” April 8). My passion!

For the past 20 years we have been going to Sydney, Australia, to visit our daughter and her family. In my estimation, Sydney is one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

Sydney is characterized by the “old” and the “new.” Two-hundred-year-old buildings are nestled amid new modern buildings . . . a charming combination.

One of the loveliest preservations, distinctive to Sydney, are the tall, skinny houses interspersed throughout the entire city, built more than 100 years ago. One of the nicest areas is Paddington. House after house tall and skinny with balconies beautifully decorated with Sydney lace (wrought iron). Their tiny, manicured front lawns protected and decorated with low wrought-iron fences. These houses have been refurbished and are in great demand by the affluent.
