THE NFL DRAFT : Rams Deal Fifth-Round Pick for Jets’ Humphery

Share

The Rams, who figured they’d have to part with tailback Greg Bell to get a veteran cornerback, got the man they wanted on draft day Sunday when they traded their fifth-round pick to the New York Jets for Bobby Humphery.

Ram Coach John Robinson was surprised to get Humphery so cheaply.

“It’s a great deal for us,” he said. “I can’t tell you how great a deal this is. That’s the cornerback we had marked.”

Robinson thought Humphery became expendable after the Jets drafted Tennessee State corner Tony Stargell with the third pick on the third round.

Humphery, a six-year veteran, has started all 16 games for the Jets at left cornerback each of the last two seasons. Last season, he made 56 tackles and had 11 passes defended.

Humphery also gives the Rams a veteran kickoff return man in the wake of Ron Brown’s free-agent signing with the Raiders.
