President Bush sought to unravel a White House mystery Monday: What bit presidential pooch Millie on the nose?

Bush, returning from a midday speech, stepped from his limousine, conferred with National Park Service groundskeepers and then led them on a search of an ivy-covered hill 50 yards from the mansion.

They poked around the knoll for a few minutes before Bush headed for the Oval Office.

“Millie got bit on the nose by some animal,” Bush said. “There’s a big hole over there.”

Millie, an English springer spaniel, had the encounter Friday and still has scabs on her nose, an aide to First Lady Barbara Bush said.

“Mrs. Bush is speculating it was something big. Millie had her nose where it shouldn’t have been,” aide Jean Becker said.
