An Inglewood sailor home on leave was accidentally shot and killed by his wife Tuesday as she tried to defend him from attacking gang members, sheriff’s deputies said.

Sheriff’s Deputy Pat Hunter said that Victor Borges, 19, a crewman on the USS Independence, was shot by his wife, Alice, 27, outside a house in the Hawthorne area following a car chase by several gang members. Fleeing from the car, Victor Borges was attacked by two gang members, Hunter said. His wife took a shotgun from their car and tried to assist him, but the gun went off accidentally. They then tried to drive to a hospital but Victor Borges died at the wheel, sending the car crashing into a nearby house, Hunter said.

Sheriff’s investigators said the shooting was accidental and did not arrest Alice Borges. The gang members fled after the shooting, Hunter said.
