The Ventura City Council has expanded a recycling program to include all 20,000 of the city’s households.
A pilot recycling program started last fall now includes only 5,000 households, but it has had excellent results, said Lauraine Brekke, assistant city manager.
More than 75% of the households participating in the pilot project recycled 14% of their waste, including newspaper, aluminum and glass. City officials hope to boost the recycling rate to 25% by 1995.
The city has spent about $90,000 promoting recycling but has an additional $60,000 budgeted for the rest of the year, Brekke said.
On Monday, the council voted unanimously make the project citywide.
