THE SIDELINES : NASCAR Chief Injured on Boat

NASCAR President Bill France Jr. was in good condition today after surgery for ankle injuries suffered in a boating accident.

France, chairman and chief executive officer of International Speedway Corp., was hurt Wednesday when a 30-foot fishing boat went airborne over a large swell, said company spokesman Jim Foster. France was standing “when it came back down and hit the water. Both ankles took the impact,” Foster said.

The boat was heading from the Halifax River into the Atlantic Ocean when France was injured, Foster said. France’s brother Jim, president of the speedway company and executive vice president of NASCAR, and two crew members aboard were not injured.
