Animal Sympathizers ‘Bite Back’

Share

Your article portrays the animal research lobbies and their multimillion-dollar campaign ($2 million from fur companies, $1 million from cosmetics, $15 to $35 million from the American Medical Assn.) as merely protecting a “necessary” industry from “irrational zealots.”

To believe the article, the whole issue is “animal rights,” or “your baby or your dog.” Such catchy, simplistic slants ignore the more difficult, frightening fact: Vivisection does not work and never has. The use of animals as scientific models for humans consistently provides misleading, inaccurate, if not altogether useless and dangerous results.

Perhaps you should consider what George Bernard Shaw once said: “Whoever doesn’t hesitate to vivisect will hardly hesitate to lie about it.”

Couldn’t you have devoted at least one paragraph to the vast numbers of people who for many years have promoted abolition of vivisection for the preservation of the human race? Many among them are medical/scientific professionals, their voices suppressed as readily as those of people who would promote alternative energy and transportation methods that challenge the foundation of the oil and automobile industries.
