NATION IN BRIEF : TENNESSEE : Jury Deadlocked in Congressman’s Trial

A judge declared a mistrial in the corruption case against Rep. Harold E. Ford (D-Tenn.) after the jury reported itself deadlocked. On the fourth day of deliberations in Memphis, Tenn., U.S. District Judge Odell Horton ended the trial in which the state’s first black congressman was charged with trading influence for $1.5 million in bribes disguised as bank loans. Ford, 44, could have faced a sentence of 95 years.
