A Spanish spelunker, suffering from depression after spending 68 days alone in a Pyrenean cave, has given up an attempt to break the yearlong world record for underground endurance.

Helpers said Friday that doctors advised Emilio Reyes, who had lost 26 pounds and believed he had been underground for only 56 days, to give up. “He looks like a concentration camp survivor,” one helper said.

Reyes had wanted to spend 375 days underground to break the 365-day record.
