A Canoga Park man suspected of kicking open an apartment door and shooting the resident to death was being sought by authorities this morning, Los Angeles police said.

Tyrone Lanier, 29, was shot several times in the upper body and died in his apartment in the 21800 block of Saticoy Street, said Detective Rick Swanston. Witnesses to the shooting at 10:45 p.m. Sunday identified the assailant as Robert James Jones, 27, Swanston said. The suspect fled after the shooting and has not been found, he said.

Police were called to the apartment by nearby residents who heard screams and shots, Swanston said. Detectives learned that Lanier and Jones had a dispute earlier in the day over two women who were staying in Lanier’s apartment.

On Sunday evening, Jones “became enraged for an unknown reason,” went to the apartment while Lanier was away, attacked the women and then vandalized Lanier’s property. Later, after Lanier returned home and found the damage, he called some mutual friends and demanded that Jones pay for damages.

An hour later, Lanier was shot to death, Swanston said.
