Bob Welch pitched a six-hitter, Rickey Henderson hit two home runs, and Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire also homered Monday night, leading the Oakland Athletics past the New York Yankees, 6-0, at New York.

Welch walked none and struck out four in Oakland’s second consecutive shutout. Dave Stewart and Dennis Eckersley combined to beat the Boston Red Sox on Sunday, 1-0.

“With the kind of bullpen we have, it’s not important to pitch a complete game,” Welch said. “The real job is to win.”

Welch pitched his 26th shutout and first since July 24, 1988, and his first complete game since last May 29. It was the A’s first complete game of the season.

“I don’t mind complete games,” Oakland Manager Tony La Russa said. “(Welch) had it all tonight.”

Boston 11, Seattle 0--Mike Boddicker and two relievers combined on a six-hitter, and Tony Pena had a three-run home run among his three hits as the Red Sox won at Boston.

Boddicker gave up six in over seven innings, striking out two and walking one. Rob Murphy pitched the eighth and Jeff Reardon the ninth.

Brian Holman, who came within one out of a perfect game against Oakland on April 20, gave up seven hits and two walks and was charged with six runs in 3 1/3 innings.

Toronto 10, Cleveland 4--George Bell doubled in a four-run first inning and hit one of four Blue Jay home runs at Cleveland in a victory marred by a bench-clearing incident.

It was the Indians’ first loss at home after six victories.

Cleveland’s Mitch Webster rushed the mound in the third inning after Todd Stottlemyre hit him with a pitch in the lower back. Webster was ejected. Stottlemyre remained in the game and pitched five innings, allowing three runs on four hits.

Both benches emptied, but there were no major confrontations.

Cleveland rookie Kevin Bearse--who has a 12.91 earned-run average in three starts--didn’t make it out of the first inning and reliever Jeff Shaw fared no better, allowing solo home runs to Junior Felix, Glenallen Hill, Bell and Tony Fernandez.

Milwaukee 6, Detroit 1--Robin Yount and Greg Brock hit home runs to lead the Brewers at Detroit.

Mark Knudson allowed eight hits, struck out three and walked two before giving way to Chuck Crim for the final out. Cecil Fielder hit his seventh homer, off Knudson, with two out in the ninth inning.

Jeff Robinson gave up nine hits, walked four and struck out two in 8 1/3 innings. He threw two wild pitches and the Tigers committed two errors, accounting for one unearned run.

Chicago 5, Texas 4--Lance Johnson singled home the winning run for the White Sox with one out in the 13th inning at Chicago after a two-base error by the Rangers’ Julio Franco.

Reliever Bobby Thigpen (1-1) pitched three hitless innings to give the White Sox their fourth consecutive victory.

The Rangers tied the score, 4-4, on a run-scoring infield single by Pete Incaviglia in the eighth.

Harold Baines hit his fourth homer for the Rangers.

Texas Manager Bobby Valentine was ejected in the seventh, apparently for complaining from the bench about plate umpire Tim Welke’s calls on balls and strikes.
