Lissane Lejeune scored two goals and Miekatine Wouters added another as the Netherlands defeated the United States 3-0 today on the opening day of the World Cup women’s field hockey tournament.

The Americans were the reserve nation for the 12-day tournament and agreed less than two weeks ago to replace the seventh-seeded Soviet Union, which withdrew because it lacked sufficient funds to compete.

The unseeded U.S. team, which has taken over the Soviet schedule, played even against the defending champion and third-seeded Dutch until the 30th minute when Lejeune scored on a penalty corner. She increased the lead to 2-0 in the 50th minute on another penalty corner.

U.S. goalkeeper Donna Lee allowed the third goal when she gave away a penalty stroke in the 65th minute that was converted by Miekatine Wouters.
