WORLD IN BRIEF : GUATEMALA : Rights Activist Killed by Gunmen

A Guatemalan human rights activist on his way to a May Day parade was assassinated by unidentified gunmen. Jose Maria Ixcaya Pixtan was killed as he left his home in the village of La Fe, planning to travel to Guatemala City for the parade. Ixcaya, 39, was a leader of the Runujel Junam Ethnic Communities Council. He is the second council member to be murdered in the last two months. The victim’ cousin told a newspaper that government soldiers killed him, but the Guatemalan military denied any involvement.
