Chargers Sign Three Additional Free Agents

The Chargers announced the signing of three free agents Wednesday, adding to the five they signed a week ago following the NFL draft.

They are: tight end Dave Colonna, 6-feet-5, 235 pounds, Duke; defensive end Mike Estes, 6-2, 220, Central Washington, and running back Jerry Mays, 5-7, 173, Georgia Tech.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The University of San Diego announced that Chris Enger has been selected to play in the U.S. Olympic Festival in Minneapolis in July. Enger averaged 9.9 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.6 blocks and was the West Coast Conference’s freshman of the year.

Candida Echeverria, USD’s all-time leading scorer with 1,211 points, was named the team’s most valuable player for the second consecutive year, at the Toreras’ banquet. Molly Hunter (defense), Christi English (most improved) and Angie Straub (hustle) were also honored.

It was also announced that Coach Kathy Marpe has signed Ernestine Rose Platero of Cochise (Ariz.) Community College. Platero led Cochise (23-8) in scoring (15.0 average) and rebounding (8.0).

MEN’S TENNIS

San Diego State defeated Air Force, 5-1, and advanced to the final of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament championship. The top-seeded Aztecs play Utah today. Against Air Force, SDSU lost only three games, with Tole Marinkovic winning at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1.

SENIOR TENNIS

Liz Harper of La Jolla, seeded sixth in the women’s 60s singles of the National Hardcourt Championship, defeated Muriel Bard of Laguna Hills, 6-0, 6-2. She and all other top-seeded players advanced to today’s third round at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.

SOFTBALL

Pitchers Debbie Corbett (Mesa College) and Deann Ford (Santana High), catcher Lisa Wilson (Chula Vista High) and shortstop Benna Kennedy (Fullerton High) have signed letters of intent to play at U.S. International.
