COUNTYWIDE : County Events Mark Cinco de Mayo, 1990

Ventura County celebrates the 128th anniversary of Mexico’s victory against the French army at the Battle of Puebla with the following Cinco de Mayo events:

TODAY:

* 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.--The Mexican American Chamber of Commerce’s Cinco de Mayo Fiesta 1990 in Oxnard kicks off with a children’s carnival, strolling mariachi bands and booths for arts and crafts, food and beer. The event is scheduled to last until 10 p.m. at Plaza Park in Oxnard.

Highlights include:

* 10 a.m., performance of Mexican dancers, including the Ballet Folklorico Regional.

* 11 a.m., opening ceremonies begin with the playing of the U.S. and Mexican national anthems and opening addresses by local officials.

Elsewhere

* 1 p.m. Alma de Mexico dance troupe and Oxnard performers Mike and Jennifer McNally will perform in the gazebo area of the Harbor Landing shopping center. Prizes will be given away at Chuy’s restaurant, 2800 S. Harbor Blvd., Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard.

* 2:30 p.m. A children’s program will be held at the Moorpark Community Center featuring a bilingual magic show, a pinata and folk dancing. Moorpark Community Center, 799 Moorpark Ave. in Moorpark. Free admission.

* 7 p.m. Moorpark’s first Miss Cinco de Mayo will be crowned at a community dance featuring local bands. Moorpark Community Center, 799 Moorpark Ave. in Moorpark. Admission is $5.

* 8 p.m. Santa Paula’s Inlakech Theatre Company presents a trilogy of Chicano-Latino theater. Teatro Mestizo from Santa Barbara will present Argentine playwright Osvaldo Dragun’s “ El Hombre que se Convirtio en Perro, “ or “The Man who Turned into a Dog,”; Teatro Inlakech will present “Ham and Eggs,” a play by Lino Landy and Ricardo Lopez Landy; El Teatro Latino from Compton Community College will present “ La Mentira ,” or “The Lie,” by Marcos Contreras. Performances will be held at the Haydock Junior High School Auditorium, 647 W. Hill St. in Oxnard. Tickets are $3 for children, $5 for adults and $12 for families.

SUNDAY:

* 10 a.m. Cinco de Mayo Fiesta 1990 continues at Plaza Park in Oxnard with a children’s carnival, mariachis and booths for arts and crafts, food and beer. Plaza Park, Oxnard.

* 1 to 5 p.m. Clowns, face painting, magic and puppet shows will be part of the celebrations at Chuy’s restaurant, 2800 S. Harbor Blvd., Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard.
