Activities for Be Kind to Animals Week

Here are a few activities that celebrate the 75th annual National Be Kind to Animals Week, which kicks off Sunday.

* Pet Parade: Bring your pet or pets (on leashes or in carriers) to the Pet Parade sponsored by the Los Angeles SPCA and KRTH radio Sunday in Century City.

The parade will follow the Avenue of the Stars route in front of the ABC Entertainment Complex from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.; check-in time is 11 a.m. The entry fee is $10 per animal, which includes a commemorative T-shirt and participation award. Proceeds benefit Los Angeles SPCA and Caring for Babies With AIDS.

* Blessing of the Animals: On Sunday (also known as Humane Sunday), Pomona Valley Humane Society will hold a Blessing of the Animals at 2 p.m. Father William Easterling of St. Joseph’s Church in Pomona will officiate at the Pomona Valley Humane Society animal shelter, 500 Humane Way, Pomona. All animals must be restrained.

* An Animal Affair: To get an early start on Be Kind to Animals Week, attend “An Animal Affair” at the Orange County Animal Shelter in Orange, today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Orange County Board of Supervisors has also waived all fees for animals adopted on this day (with the exception of vaccination fees, licensing fees and the refundable spay or neuter deposits). Each new pet owner will receive a pet starter kit for each adopted pet.

* Festival for the Animals: Animal lovers in San Diego can check out the Festival for the Animals, sponsored by the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA Sunday in the Nautilus Amphitheater at Sea World.

Admission to the park buys you admission to the festival, which will include three special shows at 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. For more information, call the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA, (619) 299-7012.
