Carwash Canceled to Conserve Water

The latest casualty in the water conservation wars may be the school carwash, a lucrative form of fund raising that is drying up along with the area’s front lawns.

Students at Sequoia Intermediate School in Newbury Park recently canceled a carwash designed to raise money for the school band after noting few water conservation efforts in the city.

The event, which was to be held last Saturday, was expected to raise about $500 to pay music festival competition fees and transportation costs, she said.

Now students and teachers are hoping to convince area businesses to donate the money that would have been raised by washing cars.

“The kids realize they may have made a sacrifice, but they feel that it will pay off for them in the long run,” said Al Zeller, the school’s band director for nearly 10 years. “But we’re still hoping that some good Samaritan out there will come to the rescue.”
