NAMES IN THE NEWS : Rights Leader Evers Bankrupt
Longtime civil rights figure and former Fayette Mayor Charles Evers has filed for bankruptcy, records show.
Evers, 67, who once owned several businesses in the small southwest Mississippi town he led as mayor for 16 years, declined to say why he filed for personal bankruptcy under Chapter 7 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.
“I think it speaks for itself,” said Evers, who serves as unpaid general manager of WMPR-FM, a Jackson public radio station.
Evers was an unsuccessful candidate for governor in 1971 and in 1983, for the U.S. Senate in 1978 and for central district highway commissioner in 1989.
According to Tuesday’s filing, Evers has less than $50,000 in assets, less than $50,000 in debt and none of his assets will be available for distribution to creditors.
