SPORTSCOPE : World Cup Player Signs With Pro Soccer Team

Paul Krumpe of Redondo Beach, a member of the U.S. World Cup team, has signed to play for Real Santa Barbara of the American Professional Soccer League West. Krumpe, 27, was the assistant women’s soccer coach at Cal State Dominguez Hills last fall. He has played for various indoor and outdoor clubs since graduating from UCLA and was a member of the 1988 U.S. Olympic Team. He will join Real Santa Barbara when his World Cup commitment ends, possibly as early as mid-June.

The Los Angeles Heat will play an exhibition soccer game with the West Bromwich Albion Football Club of England on Wednesday at West Torrance High School. Kick-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. The Heat (2-1) hosts the Seattle Storm (2-1) tonight at 7:30 p.m. at West Torrance High School in an American Professional Soccer League West match. L.A. is four points out of first place in the APSL West’s Southern Division, while Seattle is 16 points out of first place in the APSL West’s Northern Division.

The Bay Harbor Red Devils swept all four games of a double round-robin format to win the Pee Wee C Division state ice hockey title in Fresno last weekend. The Red Devils, composed of youths age 12 and 13, outscored their opponents, 26-6. The team is coached by John Mepham of San Pedro.

USC football Coach Larry Smith will be honored at a dinner Wednesday at Los Verdes Country Club in Rancho Palos Verdes by the San Pedro Peninsula and South Bay Trojan clubs. Smith will be entertained by the Trojan Marching Band and Song Girls. The event, which benefits USC athletic programs, is open to the public and costs $25 a plate. A tournament for girls’ traveling softball teams will be held by the South Bay Fire Softball Club on June 2 and 3 at Alondra Regional Park. The event is an American Softball Assn. state qualifying tournament for age 18-and-under and 16-and-under teams. The U.S. National Bicycling Team competes at the Olympic Velodrome at Cal State Dominguez Hills at 7 p.m. Friday as part of the Golden State Grand Prix racing series. North Redondo Beach Region 17 and Hawthorne Region 21 of the American Youth Soccer Organization are accepting players for the fall season. An open doubles tournament will be held at the Manhattan Beach Badminton Club on Saturday. The format calls for one strong player to be paired with a less-competitive teammate. Marine Cano’s Summer Soccer and Goalkeeping camps have openings for youths age 6 to 17. The camps run July 16 through Aug. 17 at Cal State Dominguez Hills or Alta Vista Park in Redondo Beach.
