THE SIDELINES : Berger Takes Grand Prix Pole

IMOLA, Italy —
Austrian Gerhard Berger shattered the lap record at the Imola autodrome today and beat his McLaren-Honda teammate Ayrton Senna for provisional pole in the Grand Prix of San Marino.
Berger, who switched to McLaren from Ferrari this season, covered the 3.13-mile lap in one minute 25.05 seconds in the opening qualifying practice. His average speed was 134.173 m.p.h.
