San Diego artist Everett Gee Jackson and journalist Eileen Jackson will be honored tonight as the 1990 Alumni of the Year by San Diego State University, the first time a couple have been given the honor.
Everett Jackson, 90, is a professor emeritus of art at San Diego State and a well-known expert on Mexican and Latin American art forms. He is also a prolific painter and illustrator of books.
His wife, Eileen, 84, has chronicled San Diego society happenings for more than 60 years, writing a daily column for the San Diego Union beginning in 1930 that continued through the 1970s. She now writes a weekly column for the San Diego Tribune.
SDSU President Thomas Day said Eileen Jackson, “through her writing, (is) a contemporary historian of a vibrant city” and that her husband is an “important contributor to the cultural life of our community and nation by promoting the values and culture of Mexico in the United States.”
