Tampa police officers who mistakenly stopped Milwaukee Brewer infielder Gary Sheffield and a friend outside a bar two months ago were part of a nine-member squad that was disbanded last week because of citizen complaints.
Sixteen complaints have been filed against members of the squad since 1980, 14 in the last three years, the St. Petersburg Times reported. Four complaints were sustained, five were ruled false, and seven were unsubstantiated.
Sheffield, 21, and Chuck Jones, 23, filed a harassment complaint March 16, two days after they allege that officers stopped the baseball player’s car, searched the men at gunpoint and cursed them before allowing Sheffield and Jones to leave.
