SAN DIEGO — A U.S. yacht skippered by Peter Isler will sail against a New Zealand crew assembled by Michael Fay in an eight-race regatta series in San Diego Harbor in June.
The New Zealand/American challenge, scheduled for June 15-17, will be one-on-one match races in the tradition of the America’s Cup.
David Barnes will skipper the Kiwi entry. The two crews, each ranked in the top four in the world, have agreed to race 70-foot maxi-sleds similar to the new America’s Cup Class boats.
The course will be a short one, with multiple laps, in the North Harbor by Shelter and Harbor islands.
“This will be our first regatta in the build-up for America’s Cup ‘92,” Fay said Friday in a press release.
On April 26, New Zealand’s long-standing challenge for the America’s Cup was finally resolved by the New York Court of Appeals, which ruled that the Cup be returned to the San Diego Yacht Club. The next defense will be in the spring of 1992 in San Diego.
