Firsich Claims Street Stock Victory

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Jim Firsich of Port Hueneme avoided a six-car pileup on the back straightaway of Lap 4 that wiped out the top four cars Friday night at Ventura Raceway to win his second consecutive 15-lap Street Stock oval main event.

Jim Powell Jr. of Anaheim and Tom Stephens of Ventura finished second and third, respectively.

Season points leader Chris Raschke of Ventura outdistanced an 18-car field to win the Mini Stock 20-lap oval main event. Pat Garrety and Marty Desbrow, both of Ventura, were second and third.

Stephens took control on Lap 2 of the eight-lap Street Stock figure-eight main event and cruised to an easy victory. The win put Stephens within 20 points of season points co-leaders Firsich, who finished second, and John Csorba of Oxnard, who raced third.

Ken Hewitt of Moorpark, Gary Curtis of Camarillo and Garrety were eight-lap Mini Stock heat-race winners.
