COLLEGE BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Titans Rout San Jose State, 11-5, Take 1 1/2-Game Lead in Big West

Cal State Fullerton scored six runs in the ninth inning to break a tie and defeat San Jose State, 11-5, in a Big West Conference baseball game Saturday at San Jose State.

The victory moves the Titans (32-20, 13-4 in conference) to a 1 1/2-game lead over second-place Fresno State.

The Titans had six consecutive hits in the inning, including RBI doubles by Phil Nevin and Mate Borgogno. Chris Robinson (3-3) earned the victory with 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.

Fullerton’s Kevin Farlow was four for four, including a two-run home run in the second inning. He scored three runs and had three RBIs.

In another Big West Conference game:

UC Irvine 11, Nevada Las Vegas 6--Ken Whitworth (13-4) pitched his ninth complete game for visiting Irvine (33-25, 9-11). Whitworth had seven strikeouts and four walks.

Mike Goodcase had a home run and three RBIs and Jon Damush had three hits and three RBIs for Irvine. Al Rodriguez had three hits and scored a runs for the Anteaters.

In the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.:

Cal Poly Pomona 5, Chapman 2--Catcher Neil Weingarten had a two-run homer in the fifth and first baseman Matt Bullock followed with a solo shot for Cal Poly Pomona (17-25, 10-20). Dave Paveloff (10-7) took the loss for Chapman (32-21, 18-12).
