Two teen-agers have been arrested on suspicion of setting off a pipe bomb in a car in Thousand Oaks after a second bomb exploded and injured one of them.

The injured youth, 14, was hit in the chest and groin with shrapnel. He was taken to Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, where he was treated and released, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

The incident began when the 14-year-old and a 15-year-old friend decided to set off a homemade bomb in a neighborhood park about 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Hager said. But on their way to the park, the boys threw the pipe bomb through the sunroof of a 1988 Mitsubishi parked in the 900 block of Grayrock Street.

The bomb exploded, causing $2,500 in damage to the car, fire investigator William Hager said.

A neighbor saw the boys riding away on their bicycles and gave investigators a description of the boys.

The teen-agers were discovered and arrested after the younger boy was injured at 7:14 p.m. when a pipe bomb he was making exploded at his house in the 900 block of Rawhide Place, Hager said.

After investigators arrived, the boy confessed to what he and his friend had done, Hager said.

The 15-year-old was cited and released into his parents’ custody, the county Sheriff’s Department said.
