A weekly roundup of Southland graduation ceremonies. Wednesday

Otis Arts Institute of Parsons School of Design conferred degrees on 163 graduates at its 34th commencement, with 154 receiving a B.F.A., six an M.F.A. and three an A.F.A. degree. Conceptual artist John Baldessari (San Diego State, 1953) delivered the keynote address. Honorary degrees were awarded to Baldessari; Sister Karen Bocclero, founder of Self-help Graphics and Art, an art institute, and Helen Lundberg, a prominent Southern California artist.

Friday

California Institute of Parsons School of Design conferred degrees on 244 graduates, with 143 receiving a B.F.A. and 101 receiving an M.F.A. degree. CalArts President Steven D. Lavine delivered the keynote address. Honorary degrees were awarded to Ornette Coleman, musician and composer; Beatrice Manley, actress, writer and teacher, and to Lulu May Von Hagen, CalArts trustee.

Saturday

Claremont Graduate School conferred 235 advanced degrees on graduates at its 63rd commencement. Adm. Bobby Inman (University of Texas, 1950), former director of the National Security Agency, delivered the keynote address. Desmond Tutu, Anglican archbishop of Cape Town, was awarded the President’s Medal. Honorary degrees were awarded to Inman; Jessica Tuchman Mathews, vice president of World Resources Institute, and Sherry Turkle, associate professor of sociology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Loyola Marymount University held its 78th annual commencement with Paul Westhead (St. Joseph’s University, 1961), Loyola’s basketball coach, delivering the keynote address and conferring a posthumous bachelor of arts in communication degree to Eric “Hank” Gathers. Degrees were conferred on 1,542 graduates. Honorary degrees were awarded to Dorthy Kirsten French, founder of The French Foundation for Alzheimer’s Research; Msgr. Royale M. Vadakin of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, and to Rabbi Alfred Wolf of the Wilshire Boulevard Temple.

Mount St. Mary’s College held its 61st commencement honoring 313 graduates. Anita DeFrance (Connecticut College, 1974), president of the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles, delivered the commencement address.

Claremont McKenna College conferred degrees on 233 graduates. Syndicated columnist William F. Buckley (Yale, 1950) delivered the keynote address.

Sunday

Harvey Mudd College conferred degrees on 118 students at its its 32nd commencement. Sandra Kurtzig, chief executive officer, chairwoman and president of ASK Computer Systems Inc., delivered the keynote address.

Pitzer College conferred degrees on 169 graduates at its 26th commencement. Playwright David Hwang (Stanford, 1979) delivered the commencement address. An honorary degree was awarded to Peter S. Gold, chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Pomona College conferred degrees on 349 graduates at its 97th annual commencement. Karen Horn (Pomona College, 1965), chairwoman and chief executive officer of Bank One, Cleveland, was the featured speaker. An honorary degree was awarded to Horn.

Scripps College conferred degrees on 125 graduates at its 60th commencement. Natasha Josefowitz (Scripps, 1944), adjunct professor in the College of Health and Human Services at San Diego State, delivered keynote address.

Looking Ahead

Pepperdine University Graduate School of Education and Psychology and Pepperdine Law School will hold their commencement ceremonies May 19. Frank Shakespeare, U.S. ambassador to the Vatican, will be the keynote speaker at the Graduate School of Education and Psychology and Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah) will address the law graduates.

UCLA School of Law will feature the Rev. Jesse Jackson as the keynote speaker at its 29th annual commencement on May 20. Ceremonies are not open to the public.
