From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Involuntary manslaughter charges were filed against two brothers in the death of a 14-year-old boy whom they allegedly challenged to drink 2 to 3 inches of whiskey left in a gallon jug. Leland Scovis of Thousand Oaks died of alcohol poisoning two days after the 5-foot-8, 155-pound teen-ager was hospitalized with a blood-alcohol level of .46%, more than five times the legally defined limit of intoxication. Authorities said David Campbell, 29, and his brother, Patrick, 23, were chaperoning a camping trip to Leo Carrillo State Beach in April when they allegedly dared Leland to drink the whiskey without getting sick. Another adult on the outing, Priscilla Vernon, 21, the fiancee of David Campbell, was charged with one count of being an accessory to manslaughter.
