A Baylor University pole-vaulter has been suspended for three months after testing positive for a banned substance, The Athletics Congress announced today.

TAC, the overning body of track and field competition in the United States, said Bill Payne, 22, of Joshua, Tex., tested positive for pseudoephedrine, a substance banned under International Amateur Athletic Federation rules.

The test was made from a sample taken Feb. 23 at the USAMobile Indoor Track and Field Championships. Payne, a junior at Baylor, placed third in the national meet.

A review panel upheld the suspension earlier this month. It will be effective April 4 through July 4.

TAC said the suspension does not affect Payne’s participation in collegiate competition.
