The St. Louis Blues have made what they term “a sensational” contract offer to right wing Brett Hull, who led the National Hockey League with 72 goals in his option season.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported today that the Blues are offering Hull a two-year deal for nearly $1 million a year, with an option year and a healthy signing bonus. Hull has said he wants $1 million a year, “no more, no less.”

Hull, 25, can become a free agent July 1.

“We’re not going to throw out any figures, but we think we’ve made him a sensational offer,” Blues President Jack Quinn said. “He’s one of the top players in the league. The offer is in line with where he fits with the top players in the league.”

Bob Goodenow, Hull’s agent, said the Blues’ latest offer was a “step in the right direction.”

Last year Hull made $125,000, well down the list among Blues players.
