HUNTINGTON BEACH : Pier Architect Might Design Its Buildings

The City Council will consider a proposal Monday to expand the work assigned to Ron Yeo, architect of the city’s proposed new pier. If approved, Yeo’s current contract would increase from $84,000 to $125,300.

Yeo’s contract has provoked disputes among the seven council members. Some council members have questioned whether his work is worth what the city is being charged. The council majority, however, has consistently backed the Corona del Mar-based architect, saying his plans are artistically and fiscally sound.

The proposal calls for expanding Yeo’s duties to include design and floor plans for all buildings on the pier, in addition to the pier itself. Pier buildings are expected to include a fish-gear rental store and a snack shop similar to those on the old pier, which has been closed because of unsafe conditions since July 1988.

“It is desired to proceed expeditiously with the design of the pier buildings so that they can be built in conjunction with, or very soon after, the completion of the pier,” said Louis F. Sandoval, city director of public works, in a staff report to the City Council.
