5 Scholarships Are Awarded by Hospital

Scholarships of $1,000 have been awarded by the St. Joseph Hospital Foundation to Robert Kovacev of Yorba Linda, Derek Kelaita of Anaheim, Jason Padilla of Garden Grove, and Stan Kim and Quan Nguyen, both of Orange.

Each will use the scholarship to pursue college studies in the medical and health care field.

The five high school students achieved outstanding records of academic and extracurricular accomplishments, and each donated 200 hours as a junior volunteer for the hospital.

Garden Grove resident Stacy Adair has been named the recipient of the 1990 Dudly Boyce Outstanding Student Award as the Golden West College student who most exemplifies the qualities of scholarship and leadership.

The award, which includes a $1,000 scholarship, is named after the founding president of the college.

The college also named Bill Siracusa, a lifelong Huntington Beach resident, as its Outstanding Citizen for establishing scholarships and supporting the school since it opened in 1966.

Fountain Valley resident E. Aubrey Woodroof, founder of Woodroof Laboratories Inc. and vice president of Winthrop Pharmaceuticals in Fountain Valley, has been named 1990 Distinguished Alumnus by the San Diego State University College of Sciences.

Woodroof is widely recognized for his contributions in medical science. He developed two tissue heart valves and a wound dressing that is distributed worldwide.

He graduated in 1966 with a degree in biology and received a doctorate in biochemistry from UCLA in 1970.

Sandra Caton of Huntington Beach was named Woman of Achievement by the Orange County Chapter of Women in Management at its annual conference. A specialist in newsletters, she is a past president of the group and is owner of Caton Graphics and Publishing.

Girl Scouts Vanessa Chepo of Huntington Beach and Stephanie Sumner of Mission Viejo have been chosen by their Girl Scout Council to attend the Capitol Event June 25-29 in Sacramento. The event teaches legislative process to the Scouts and prepares them for active roles in the political system.

James A. Higgins of Laguna Beach, who has a 3.8 grade-point average at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, has been named Outstanding Student at the community college level by the Orange County Engineering Council.

It is the ninth time in 10 years that the award at the community college level has been won by a Saddleback College engineering student.

Sandra K.Young of Newport Beach, a graduate of UCLA with a fine-arts degree, has been elected president of the 400-member Orange County chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers.

Young is vice president of design and product development at the Levelor Corp., a manufacturer of window coverings.

Members of her board of directors include Louise Bieger of Costa Mesa; Martha Burke of Fullerton; Lynn Deal of Newport Beach; Brian Freeborn of Long Beach; Christine Hallen-Berg and Jackie Jacobson, both of Laguna Beach; Roxanne Johnson of Orange; Jerry McKnight of Newport Beach; and Kent Roberts and Kathy Weir, both of Irvine.

Boy Scout Eric Anderson, 17, of Yorba Linda will be awarded his Eagle Scout rank at a Court of Honor Sunday at St. Martin de Porres Church in Yorba Linda.

Anderson painted safety marks and handball courts at Van Buren Elementary School in Yorba Linda. He attends Valencia High School.

Santa Ana resident Helen Shanbrom has been named Woman of the Year in the 35th state Senate District by Sen. John Seymour (R-Anaheim). She was honored for her crusade to improve highway and truck safety.

She became involved in truck safety four years ago after the death of her son due to a speeding truck.
