Black-Eyed Susan Won by Charon

Charon, the 3-year-old filly who would be undefeated except for her second-place finish against Go for Wand at Keeneland last month, moved from fifth place to the lead on the far turn Friday and won the $250,000 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes by 7 1/4 lengths at Pimlico.

Hail Atlantis, the 8-5 favorite who was trying to give trainer Wayne Lukas his fourth victory in the stake, led the 1 1/8-mile race until she faded near the top of the stretch. She finished eighth in the nine-horse field.

Craig Perret, riding Charon for the first time and never using his whip, rode the Mo Exception-Double Wiggle filly to her fifth victory in 1:48 2/5, 1 1/5 seconds off the track record.

Valay Maid finished second, three-fourths of a length ahead of Bright Candles. Bright Candles finished a half-length ahead of her Lukas-trained stablemate, Train Robbery. Charon, the second betting choice, paid $6.20.
