OXNARD : Rio School District Protests Median

Share

The Rio School District will write a letter to Caltrans opposing the installation of a median on Vineyard Avenue that would prevent motorists from turning left into Rio Elementary School.

Supt. John McGarry said the district opposes the median because buses will have to be rerouted or a new entrance built if the median is installed in two weeks, as planned. The median is to run on Vineyard between the Ventura Freeway and Sycamore Street.

“We would like the state to come up with a suitable alternative to meet the needs of the school,” McGarry said.

But the city of Oxnard, which is requiring Home Depot to pay for the median because of increased traffic in the area, said the district has not suggested any alternatives to the median.

“We feel it is necessary because the traffic flow has increased substantially,” said Bob Weithofer, a city transportation manager. “We believe it is a hazardous situation and it’s in a place that does not meet our city standards.

“There is potential for traffic accidents and in this we are taking action,” Weithofer said.

Weithofer said Oxnard expects Caltrans to provide the permits for the construction within two weeks.
